Sutton St. Nicholas – St. Nicholas

Sutton St. Nicholas lies about 4 miles outside Hereford and is home to an interesting legend. Not far from the village is a the Wergin Stone, which is actually a group of several stones. The villagers used to put their tithes under one of these stones, which would be collected later by the local squire. The story goes that in 1652 the Devil moved this stone and it took a team of 9 ox to put it back where it belonged.
Just south of the village is the remains of an iron age fort, Sutton Walls, where King Offa had a splendid palace. Skeletons have been found on the site, and many of them clearly had a violent death.
