Almeley, meaning Elm Meadow, lies 400 feet above sea level with splendid views of the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and Wye Valley. There are many old and interesting houses and farms (in keeping with most of the villages in Herefordshire) including Almeley Manor, the oldest part of which dates from the fourteenth century. For a while it was known as the Court House, and for over 300 years was lived in by the Snead family. The Summer House once housed the early Almeley Quaker, Roger Prichard, and in 1672 he donated the nearby cottage to the Quakers and it is still in use for meetings to this day.
